Overview

Windows Server 2022 Essentials is Microsoft's latest small business server offering, delivering the advanced security and hybrid cloud capabilities of the Server 2022 platform in a simplified package designed for organizations with up to 25 users and 50 devices. Like its predecessors, no Client Access Licenses are required — the server license covers all connected users and devices. The security posture of Server 2022 Essentials represents a generational leap. Secured-core server technology provides hardware-rooted security with firmware protection via Dynamic Root of Trust for Measurement (DRTM), virtualization-based security (VBS) that isolates critical processes from the operating system, and hardware-enforced code integrity that prevents unsigned drivers and code from executing. These protections defend against the most sophisticated firmware-level attacks that traditional antimalware cannot detect. TLS 1.3 is enabled by default with HTTP/3 support, encrypting all network communications with the latest cryptographic standards. SMB over QUIC enables secure file server access over the internet without a VPN — remote workers can access shared folders directly with certificate-based encryption, eliminating the complexity of VPN configuration for file access scenarios. Azure hybrid integration reaches its most refined state in Server 2022 Essentials. Azure Arc enables centralized management of the on-premises server from the Azure portal alongside cloud resources. Windows Admin Center provides a modern browser-based management interface that replaces legacy MMC snap-ins with a responsive, intuitive dashboard accessible from any device. Storage improvements include SMB compression for faster file transfers over networks, storage bus cache for affordable performance acceleration using NVMe or SSD caching layers, and improved ReFS performance for data-intensive workloads. Networking includes DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) for encrypted DNS resolution and improved TCP performance. The Essentials Experience role in Server 2022 maintains the simplified dashboard, automated client backup, Remote Web Access, and guided setup wizards that make small business server administration accessible to non-specialists. However, unlike previous Essentials editions, Server 2022 Essentials is built on the same codebase as Standard — giving you the option to upgrade in place if your business grows beyond 25 users.
